One of the southernmost regions of Italy, the province of Puglia has a long coastline along the Adriatic Sea and forms the heel of Italy's famed boot region. The geography of the region features natural parks, rolling hills and stunning coastal views. Puglia is Italy's most economically important olive oil producing region with about 60 million olive trees that each year produce almost half of Italy's olive oil and about 12% of the world’s total production. Before the Greeks and the Romans, the region was inhabited by the Iapygians, who settled the area. Archaeological evidence suggests they grew olive trees and made olive oil as early as 1000 BC. Some of the best olive oil producers in Puglia are Olio De Carlo, Olio Guglielmi and Sabino Leone. The main olive varieties grown in Puglia are Coratina, Ogliarola and Peranzana.
